What's New in Version 6?
The portal system was updated in 2024 to version 6 of the Plone content management system and includes several new features and upgrades.
User Account Status and Deactivation
To improve the security of the portals and to help Site Administrators more easily manage users, accounts for users who do not log in regularly are inactivated, and eventually disabled, if no action is taken to reactivate the accounts.
- Active - the user is new or has logged into the portal within the last 90 days.
- Inactive - the user has not logged into the portal within the last 90 days. Users can reactivate their own accounts (see below).
- Disabled - the user has not logged into the portal within the last 2 years (730 days) or the Site Administrator manually disabled the account. Only a Site Administrator can reactive a disabled account.
To support this feature, several updates were made to the User listing to view and change the status of users, and to see the last login date for individual users. Learn more on the User Management and User Account Status help pages.
Updated Look and Feel
While the overall look and feel is consistent with the previous version, Plone 6 leverages a modern design framework that is more responsive to be functional on various screen sizes, and accessible, with modern design touches you'll find in the styling of navigation menus and toolbars, buttons, tables, as well as icons and fonts used throughout the site. A description of the layout can be found on the Understanding the Site Interface page.
Subscriptions Available on All Portals
The subscriptions product has been enabled on all portals, which allows users to receive notifications when content is modified. All logged in users can manage their own subscription preferences and notification settings through the My Subscriptions link in the user's menu. Site Administrators can assign subscriptions that are customized to individual users through Manage Subscribers under Site Setup.
Consolidated Editor Toolbar Links
The editor toolbar has been streamlined to group related actions and includes improved icons to help editors recognize options.
Site Setup and Help Links have Moved
To keep all the site administrator's required links in one location, the Site Setup and Help links have been moved from the upper right corner of the page to the bottom of the editor toolbar. This groups all the links needed by editors and site administrators into the editor toolbar.
Improved Content (WYSIWYG) Editor
The WYSIWYG editor has been upgraded and includes more options for formatting and styling text. New options were added to layout text using accordions, columns, and tabs to provide editors with more advanced display choices for content. The toolbar buttons and menus have been streamlined with clearer formatting and editing choices.
File Type and Size Displayed
When you link to a file within the WYSIWYG editor, the file type and size will be displayed automatically after the link to provide information to users before they download a file.
Uploading Multiple Files
The method to upload multiple files at once has changed with Plone 6. Multiple files are now uploaded from the folder's Contents page using the Upload button. Once files are successfully uploaded, you can then use the tools and actions on the Contents page to more easily change the state of, rename, and cut/copy/delete one or more files at a time. Individual files can still be uploaded using the File option from a folder's Add new... toolbar menu.
Change Ownership
A new feature was added for Site Administrators to change ownership of content from one user to another. This can be useful when a user is removed from a portal and you want to transfer ownership and responsibility for maintaining the content to a new user.
Retired Features
The following features are no longer available due to limited use or incompatibility with the new system.
- Issue Tracker content type
- Message Board
