Change a User's Password, Email Address and Name
User account information is pulled into the portal automatically from the user's respective login service provider. User names, emails and passwords can only be changed within the login service systems. The Site Administrator cannot change account information on any portal. When account information is updated in the login service system, the associated/linked Portal account gets updated with any new information the next time the user signs in.
Change a User’s Password
Users who forgot their passwords must go through their login service provider to have their passwords changed.
- NIH users can follow the Trouble signing in? link on the NIH Network sign-in page or contact the NIH IT Service Desk.
- Login.gov users can follow the Forgot your password? link on the Login.gov sign-in page.
- IMS Login Service users can follow the Forgot Password? link on the IMS Login Service sign-in page or go directly to the IMS Login Service (this service will be retired in May 2025).
- IMS staff can visit the https://iforgotmypassword.imsweb.com link on the login page.
Change a User's Email Address and Name
The Site Administrator cannot change a user's email address or name associated with a login account. When a user links their login service account to a portal, the email address, first name, last name, and username are automatically retrieved from the login service system and uploaded to the portal. This process is repeated with each subsequent login so that the portal account information is always synchronized with the information stored in the login service system. Login.gov users will not have their email address updated at each login because Login.gov can store multiple email addresses, including personal email addresses, and allows users to sign in with any of the stored addresses.
Login.gov users can change their email addresses and/or names by logging into Login.gov to access and update their profiles. NIH users must contact the NIH IT Service Desk.
It is possible for Site Administrators to send a new registration email to a different email address than the one set in the portal user profile. See Send New Registration to a User for more information.
